So, I only recently discovered Ruby Gloom and fell in love with it instantly. And, then, because I'm that kind of person, I immediately started to research everything I could about the show. And learned some things.
I learned that, unfortunately, the show only lasted for 40 episodes and was cancelled in 2008, which was 6 friggin' years ago.
But I also learned that the show still has a small, silent, but definitely dedicated cult following.
BUT I also learned that this cult following is strewn about all over the net. A few (pretty inactive) Facebook groups here, some Tumblrs there, a bunch of groups on DeviantArt and some forum posts that died years ago after 3 responses.
And I was sad. I was sad enough when I realized that after 40 episodes, there'd be no more gloomy fun to have. But I got even more sad when I found out that there was apparently no place to go to talk to fellow Ruby Gloom fans (Gloomers? Is there a term?). I was especially sad because the fans I found here and there were genuinely invested in the show, talking about it even years after it had been cancelled and even starting petitions to bring the show back. So, I thought to myself that it was time for an experiment.
This is that experiment.
I want to make this board THE meeting place for fans of Ruby, Misery, Doom Kitty, Skull Boy & Co. I want to have as many people looking at the bright side of the dark side as possible. I want to give fans like me a place to talk to each other, find new friends and to preserve their love for this darkly cute cartoon. To exchange fanworks, thoughts, theories...cookie recipes, whatever!
I've been observing Internet fan culture for some time. I've been (and still am) part of several fandoms and observed several others. Firefly fans only had thirteen episodes and a movie, which aired almost 10 years ago (!) and they're still out there. Fans of the Oddworld video game franchise were patiently waiting for years until a new game was announced...and they weren't even sure whether there would ever be one! I don't want the Ruby Gloom fandom to fade just because all you can do as a fan is sit down at your computer, watch the episodes and look at some fanart. I don't want people to get bored because they have no one to talk to. So here we are. Here, we can talk to each other.
The only strong fandom is an organized fandom. A Facebook page that updates once in a blue luna or the occasional thread in a non-RG centric forum doesn't do much. We should unite, under one flag, in one forum. Maybe we're not many, but that's even more reason to come together in one place!
And maybe...if we concentrate in one spot...we can bring it back. Of course, our chances are probably slim. Maybe it's near impossible. There's a bigger chance that Disco is coming back than there is one that Ruby Gloom is coming back. But a small chance is still a chance. And we certainly have better chances if we band together, instead of being scattered around smaller communities all over the web.
So, here is the forum. It is probably still very empty when you read this but PLEASE, don't let that discourage you. Go introduce yourself, go start discussions, be it about the show or other things!
With that said:
Happy glooming, and always look at the bright side of the dark side!
